More on Kerry's Navy discharge status - new Lipscomb article
Kerry's Discharge Is Questioned by an Ex-JAG Officer - November 1, 2004 - The New York Sun:
"Mr. Kerry has said, 'I applied to Harvard, Boston University, and Boston College. I was extremely late. Only BC would entertain a late application.'
"It is hard to see why Mr. Kerry had to file an 'extremely late' application since he lost the congressional race in Lowell, Mass., the first week of November 1972 and was basically doing nothing until he entered law school the following September of 1973. A member of the Harvard Law School admissions committee recalled that the real reason Mr. Kerry was not admitted was because the committee was concerned that because Mr. Kerry had received a less than honorable discharge they were not sure he could be admitted to any state bar.
"The fact that Mr. Kerry had cancelled his candidacy for a Congressional seat in 1970 in favor of Father Robert Drinan cannot have hurt Mr. Kerry's admission to Boston College. The Reverend Robert Drinan's previous position was dean of the Boston College Law School." [After dropping out of the 1970 House race and endorsing Drinan, Kerry joined the Drinan effort as campaign manager.]
This is getting us much closer to the smoking gun if there is one. Of course, it is way too late to be of any use in the campaign. But there are still problems with the story.
In particular, the paper trail we have in the official Kerry files contains both the JAG officer's memo from 1985 (mentioned in this new Lipscomb article) and a letter from Navy personnel to Sen. Kerry in 1986 showing unbroken service in the inactive reserve through the date of the Claytor letter. Would a revision of discharge status have included retroactive reinstatement in the reserves?
"'Mr. [Michael] Meehan [a Kerry spokesman] may well be right and all Mr. Kerry's military records are on his Web site,' Mr. Sullivan said."
I keep seeing this sort of remark and it is just plain stupid to concede this point. Based solely on examination of the materials on the official Kerry website, it can be proven that not all the non-medical records have been posted. Examination shows that there should be at least three DD 214s for Sen. Kerry, but only one is provided. The one he gives us is for the end of his enlisted service at graduation from OCS in December 1967. We know there was a second one (which is not in the file) dated January 1970 covering his release from active duty because his file includes a DD 215 (from 2001) amending its listing of Kerry's ribbons and medals. There must also be a third from February 1978 (also not in the file), because the form letter from SecNav Claytor is the cover letter for it. Kerry and his spokesmen who keep saying all the relevant files are on his site are ignoramuses, morons, or liars - those are the only choices.
