What's wrong with this picture?

The outing of Valerie Plame

Am I the only one who thinks there is something strange about the way this little drama is playing out? Even by Washington standards (I do not use the phrase in its oxymoronic sense), this doesn't add up. If it were a movie script, no studio would greenlight it because it makes no sense and there are no car crashes.

Bob Novak did the outing in his syndicated column. And Novak himself wrote an account of the controversy that grew out of that story saying that he got Plame's name and CIA connection confirmed by a source at CIA who made no mention of her being a covert operative whose name could not be disclosed. But it is a couple of reporters for the NY Times and Time magazine who are in jail for refusing to discuss their sources for stories they did based on Novak's work. And all sorts of White House types have been dragged in as well. Here is the latest installment:
Rove Testifies in Investigation of CIA Leak.

Despite over a year's effort and millions of dollars wasted, I predict that ultimately this will go nowhere. But it's a great stick to beat Bush with in the meantime.
