Another attack on property rights in California
Calif. County OKs Aggressive Housing Plan :
"Three percent of housing must be reserved for families with ``extremely low-income,'' under $17,300 a year. The remaining 12 percent will be split between ``very low-income'' families earning less than $28,850 and ``low-income'' families earning less than $46,150.
"The county and other sources will provide about $10 million in annual subsidies to cover the difference between the market price of the housing and what the families can afford to pay."
I'm a little mystified as to how $46,150 equates to low-income. Here in Greenville County, SC, a couple both newly hired by the county as sheriff's deputies or EMTs would qualify as low-income yet could live rather comfortably. Just how expensive is Sacramento County?
In typical sloppy reporting, the AP story does not indicate how the $10 million annual subsidy will be divided, nor how the money will cover out years if, as the county is reported to expect, this program adds 300 low-income units per year.
The story does, however, throw in the obligatory tug at our heart strings with a quote from a homeless advocate that each low-income home will equate to a family no longer having to live in their automobile.
