The puzzle no nearer solution

FBI Searches Office of Pro-Israel Lobbying Group

As I have said before, it hard to know what to make of this case. Even if one assumes that information was being passed, outside proper channels, from DOD to Israel, it makes no sense for AIPAC to be involved. Today's story announces that the FBI has searched AIPAC's offices for the second time (the last time was August 27).

While I give little credence to Israel's claim that they suspended espionage operations against the US in the wake of the very embarrassing Pollard affair, there are many better ways to have handled a case like this than to risk the good reputation of the leading pro-Israel lobbying organization in the US. And the Israelis are very good at the craft of HUMINT.

The US Attorney in Alexandria has been on this hunt for nearly four years and the man identified in press reports as passing secrets to Israel has not been charged. Four AIPAC officials have now been subpoenaed for grand jury testimony. Time will tell.
