Politics as usual ... with fists, guns and boots

Reporting on a break-in at a Bush campaign office in Spokane, The Seattle Times noted:
"In Bellevue last week , computers that stored the Republican get-out-the-vote database were stolen in a burglary at the Republican headquarters there . Bush campaign officials believe the break - ins are part of a broader attack on the president's re-election offices around the country, including a burglary in Canton, Ohio, last night, gun shots fired in West Virginia, Florida and Tennessee and union protestors storming offices in three Florida cities and Minneapolis."

I don't recall politics being conducted on such a high, spriritual plane since 1968 when a Republican and a Democrat precinct official each tried to help a blind voter. The two officials in a rare display of bipartisan cooperation both entered the voting booth but could not agree on how to mark the blind voter's ballot. Words being insufficient to break the impasse, both drew their pistols and each wounded his adversary. The lack of fatalities indicates either an appalling paucity of marksmanship skills or divine intervention. Given that the incident happened in Kentucky, I favor the latter explanation.
